THE WRITE STUFF>
HARD WORDS FOR HANDLING REJECTION
January 2, 2010
The first time I submitted my book to a publisher, it was turned it down. However, the publisher gave me this great advice. He said, our decision is not personal its business. The book is good and if it doesnt get published its your own damn fault. Being an author means developing other gifts as well. If youre not willing to sell, market and promote your books, dont bother writing them. **************************************************************
Diane Keyes first book, Spirit of the Snowpeople, published by Down East Books last fall, sold out the first printing less than three weeks after its publication date. Her new book This Sold House, received two gold awards from the Midwest Independent Publishers Association in the business and how-to categories. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hello everyone,
Marketing can be a daunting task. What Diane has said rings true. You will need to develop a tough skin if you want to succeed in this business.
I had a most unsettling experience when I was a new novel writer and attended a local conference. I thought I had my novel outline and chapter samples up to par. I did my homework and approached the editor of the publishing house I thought would be interested in my type of work. Well, needless to say, I was wrong! After giving my pitch and believing she'd love it, she looked me square in the eye and said "I can always tell an amateur when they bring me work like this." I can tell you, if there was a hole in the ground I'd jump into it just not to let her see my red cheeks of embarrassment. I went home wanting to never write again, but I couldn't because writing was in my blood. What happened was I got angry and that anger fueled trying harder and learning more about the business. Today, I have two novels to my name, the first, The Rich American Woman won the John Gardner Award for best main character description. The second, Treasures in Clay Vessels, received a five star rating from Reader Views.
So don't ever give up!
